Glamour Of Fluorescent Lights

The conventional lighting systems of luminescent lights are more popular than Fluorescent Lights. They are also extensively used as they are economical compared to their counterparts. Though complex in fitting, there are more advantages in fluorescent lightings. People are shifting their priorities more towards fluorescents than other incandescent lights like tube lights. The fluorescents are comparatively lesser costly and have a longer life span than the incandescent lights. Besides these, there are also numerous other advantages that people can acquire from this kind of lights due to which the demand of these lights is increasing heavily around the globe. Fluorescent lights can give a new look to the entire decoration of your room.

A typical structure of a fluorescent light consists of a sealed tube. This tube contains a very small amount of mercury, some inert gas like argon which can be ionized and phosphor powder. The amount of mercury used is always kept very less. The tube contains electrodes, typically two, connected to the alternating current (AC) Mains by means of electric wires. When the main switch is ‘on’; the electric current flows between the two electrodes in the sealed glass tube which lights the tube. The process is commonly termed as ‘arcing’. More scientifically, when electric current flows through the inert gas, the atoms of this gas attain the ‘excited state’ and get ionized. Due to this, these atoms emit photons and emitted photons vibrate at the frequency levels of Ultra Violet (UV) light. When UV light strikes the phosphor powder, a bright light is produced in the visible range. This process outlines the basic concept of the fluorescent Lighting system.

The reducing electricity bills every year are evident due to the fact that the fluorescent lightings are more than 60% cheaper than the incandescent or the regular house lights. In comparison to the conventional lights, fluorescent lights have longer lifespan which is almost six times more. They have less tendency of burning, even on continuous use. They are generally sold with a long warranty period and can be replaced in case of improper functioning. As we all know that every coin has two sides, fluorescent lightings also have some disadvantages associated with them. The initial set up cost is much higher and may require the professional electrician as the installation process is very complex in contrast to the conventional lights.

For safety reasons, the fluorescents need a proper procedure for their disposal as they contain mercury. We should not throw them to the trash or the waste directly. Before throwing, we must place them in stronger re-sealable bags properly. If a fluorescent light tube breaks, remove the glass particles and then follow the above procedure for disposal. The fluorescent lights always score over the standard lights due to two main reasons: lesser electricity consumption and longer life span compared to the standard lightings. These advantages have made these fluorescent lights more popular among the people. The lighting systems are continuously evolving and people are searching further for a more economic and energy saving lighting system.
